Dioctophyma renale AND CANINE TRANSMISSIBLE VENEREAL TUMOR (TVT): A CASE REPORT

Stray animals constitute an important epidemiological risk group for conditions such as dioctophymosis and canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT). Dioctophymosis is caused by the nematode Dioctophyma renale, and infection occurs through the ingestion of raw food in wetland areas. TVT is a contagious round-cell tumor associated with mating with an infected animal. This study reports a canine patient with an epidemiological profile consistent with the literature, concurrently affected by both conditions. Dioctophymosis was diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography, and unilateral nephrectomy was selected as the treatment. TVT was diagnosed by cytology, and cytotoxic chemotherapy was initiated weeks after nephrectomy. At the end of treatment, renal function parameters were preserved, and complete regression of the tumor mass was observed, indicating clinical cure of both conditions. These findings support the adequacy of the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches adopted and highlight the importance of a treatment plan that prioritizes sequential decision-making in managing concurrent diseases to improve patient prognosis.
