Abstract

In Brazil, the expansion of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has significantly increased the number of individuals engaged in academic environments, raising discussions about the impacts of this context on students’ health and well-being. However, studies investigating the relationship between the academic environment and the quality of life (QoL) of nursing students remain limited. In this context, this study aimed to assess the quality of life of nursing students across different academic periods, identifying influencing factors and their associations with sociodemographic data. Regarding the methods, this was a descriptive, observational, and quantitative study conducted with nursing students from a private university in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Data collection was carried out over one week during the first semester of 2023 using an electronic form administered in person. The WHOQOL-BREF instrument, validated in Brazil, and a sociodemographic questionnaire were used. All participants were informed about the study objectives and provided written informed consent. In terms of results, of the 458 eligible students, 137 participated in the study. Most participants were employed (79.6%), with 17.5% holding more than one job. The lowest quality of life scores were observed in the psychological (54.3) and environmental (50.1) domains, whereas higher scores were found in the physical (60.0) and social relationships (60.2) domains. It is concluded that academic overload and employment were associated with poorer quality of life, highlighting the need for institutional support strategies.
