USE OF PENILE PROSTHESIS FOR THE TREATMENT OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AFTER RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY: CASE REPORT

Introduction: Erectile dysfunction (ED) after radical prostatectomy (RP) is a common complication, regardless of the surgical technique used, resulting from possible injuries to the neurovascular structures involved in erection, which may be transient or permanent. In cases refractory to clinical treatment, penile implant is a possible solution for this condition. Objective: To describe the clinical case of a patient who developed erectile dysfunction after RP surgical procedure, being treated with penile prosthesis implantation. Case report: A 59-year-old male patient underwent RP due to a prior diagnosis of prostate adenocarcinoma, developing ED as a complication. After failed clinical treatments, the implantation of a semirigid penile prosthesis was performed, enabling the recovery of sexual function and significantly improving the patient’s quality of life. Conclusions: The implantation of a semirigid penile prosthesis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction refractory to medical treatment in a patient who underwent RP due to prostate adenocarcinoma proved to be effective and safe in restoring sexual function. It is necessary to expand clinical and observational research on the use of penile prostheses in the context of post-RP to establish protocols and contribute to evidence-based clinical practices.
