Abstract

Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Obesity treatment involves nutritional, pharmacological, and lifestyle changes, as well as more invasive interventions such as metabolic surgery. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is a strategy to obesity control, which is offered to patients who have already undergone other forms of treatment with insignificant results. The current study was designed to describe blood pressure and heart rate variability (HRV) adaptive alterations in individuals previously submitted to MBS. This study is a narrative, and exploratory review conducted by using the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, Google Scholar, and CAPES basis. As inclusion criteria, it was considered complete articles published between 2002 and 2025. Based on the obtained evidence, it is possible to verify that MBS impacts different morphological and functional aspects, besides resulting in effects on the secretion of intestinal hormones, blood pressure control, and HRV (heart rate variability). Further investigations with different designs are needed to establish reliable evidence to support health decision-making, especially regarding the long-term outcomes of the surgery.
