HEALTH PROFESSIONALS' PERCEPTIONS OF SUICIDE ATTEMPTS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: A SCOPING REVIEW

To map the scientific literature on health professionals' perceptions regarding suicide attempts in children and adolescents. This is a scoping review developed according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and reported following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework (DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/3NMUB). The systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Embase, and Virtual Health Library databases, in addition to gray literature. The guiding question followed the PCC strategy: "What are health professionals' perceptions of youth suicide attempts?". Qualitative studies in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. Out of 750 identified studies, 10 were included in the final analysis, representing research from the United Kingdom, Nicaragua, the Netherlands, Brazil, France, Australia, and the United States. Nine studies presented evidence level IV and one level III according to JBI classification. The analysis revealed heterogeneous professional perceptions, highlighting challenges in training, the presence of stigmas, difficulties in clinical management, and the need for specific protocols for child and adolescent populations. Professionals reported feelings of unpreparedness, anxiety, and frustration when assisting cases of suicide attempts in young people. Barriers were identified related to communication with pediatric patients, lack of specific training, and inadequate resources in health services. The study evidenced significant gaps in the training of health professionals for the adequate management of youth suicide risk situations, underscoring the need for ongoing education strategies and the development of specific clinical protocols within the scope of the SUS.
